Why have a micro wedding?

Some couples prefer the idea of having a micro wedding because having fewer guests allows them to have more quality time and, conversations with the people they invite. Some feel that by having a more intimate day, they can focus more on the true meaning of marriage and not have to spend so much money, time, and energy planning all the extras. And, sometimes you can plan a wedding on much shorter notice, if you decide “screw it, let’s just do it!”

Choosing a venue for your micro wedding

Having a smaller guest list, I believe opens you up to much more choices in venues. Bigger venues often have a minimum number of guests which you have to fill, or at the very least you have to pay for that minimum amount of guests, even if you are having fewer people attending!
In Scotland, you can marry anywhere you want to, even outdoors, as long as the ceremony is conducted by a religious official, registrar, or a non-religious Humanist Society Scotland celebrant.
So why not get married by a Loch, in your garden, hire a marquee and jazz up a local farm, or as Suzanne and Brendon did in these images, hire a couple of cozy lodges.

Have a first look

Since you’ll have fewer guests to hide from during morning preparations, you might want to share a “first look”. A first look is when you and your partner see one another BEFORE the ceremony.
This can help ease nerves, which in my experience, will allow for a much more calming experience during your ceremony. Not only will you feel less nervous, but it is also some of the most romantic photos captured on your day as there is a lot less pressure, due to the fact you have no audience or expectations. It can be a very emotional experience, and couples seem to have such natural reactions during a first look. Let the tears and laughter flow! Woop woop!

Zero pressure ceremony

(have your dogs and set up a zoom call)

Usually, during a micro wedding, there is much less pressure on timings and you can do things your way, taking things at your own pace.

Brendon’s Mum joined their ceremony via a Zoom call, and they were able to stop and show her around, to allow her to feel fully immersed in the experience. What a world we live in, how cool is that technology makes that possible?!
You can also bring your dogs if you want to, and even stop mid-ceremony for kisses and cuddles with your pooch! Or, even better, your dog can be your ring bearer!

Focussing on relaxed and natural moments

There’s no need to spend hours on end having your portraits taken. Because there will be fewer group shots to get around, we can spend more time focussing on the fun and natural moments – like sprinkling confetti on your dog! Yay!

Your wedding portraits

Because we will have a little extra time on our hands – if you want to, we can adventure to exciting nearby locations to capture some stunning portraits. Brendon and Suzanne opted to head to nearby woods, just a 5-minute drive from their cabin. It was so much fun to hop in the car and explore. Plus, it is so nice to have a few moments out just the two of you, to really revel in your newlywed bubble.

Bring your furry firends

My favorite by far. My dog is my life. It is no secret.
And for anyone just like me, you will also prioritize your dog on the day and want to involve them just as much as the rest of the family! Why not get some personalized tags made or even some small flowers for their collars, so they can really be part of your day! Choosing a more intimate or exclusive venue means your dogs can wander around and you don’t have to worry about any members of the public etc like you might have to at a hotel for example.

Celebrate your own way

Pop the champers, get the BBQ on, have a campfire. Don’t like dancing? Don’t dance!
There are no rules, and you can celebrate your day exactly how you want to. I always say to my couples – imagine you are planning a joint birthday partner with one another. What would that look like? It’s amazing how suddenly something clicks when I say this and people realize they really can do anything they want!
