Your adorable new little human baby will always be the star of the show during your newborn session but I do like to make a fuss over your other VIP (very important pooch!) too. For families with dogs, incorporating your furry friends can add a heartwarming touch to the photos. Here are some tips from a photographer’s perspective to help you seamlessly include your dogs in your at-home newborn photoshoot.

1. Prepare your Pets

**Prepare Your Pets**

Before the shoot, ensure your dogs are well-exercised and have had a chance to burn off any excess energy. A walk or play session will help them relax and be more cooperative during the photoshoot. Additionally, make sure they are groomed and clean, so they look their best in the photos.

2. Allow me to introduce myself

When I first arrive at your session, I will always get down to their level and allow your pooches to approach me, and I don’t mind if they’re a bit jumpy or kissy whilst they get familiar with me, especially since I am a stranger coming into their home.

3. Safet First

This might seem like an obvious one but always prioritize the safety of your newborn. Never leave the baby unattended with the dogs, even if they are well-behaved. Have another adult present to help manage the dogs and ensure the baby’s safety throughout the shoot. It’s best to let me know ahead of time about any over-excitable pooches and that when it comes time for me to photograph your baby, they are kept at a distance, so I can focus on your baby.

4. Have their favourite toys/treats to hand

Having your doggies favourite toy or blanky nearby to encourage them to sit with the family is a great idea. And when the time is right – have treats on hand to reward your dogs for good behavior. This helps keep them engaged and encourages them to follow your commands. Use the treats to guide them into position and keep their attention towards the camera.

5. Let them shine

There will be several breaks during your shoot, when your baby needs to be fed or changed and we can use this time wisely to fuss over your pooch too! You can have turns cuddling your doggy for some nice pictures, or even let them have a few on their own.

I hope these little tips have helped you think ahead about including your fur baby at your newborn photoshoot, but please let me know if you have any questions, and don’t forget to sign up to my newsletter for even more tips and tricks!
